African Swine Fever



African Swine Fever (ASF) is a viral disease of pigs and wild boars that most commonly appears in the acute form as a haemorrhagic fever, and is usually deadly. It is highly contagious, caused by an Iridovirus of family Asfarviridae. Humans are not susceptible to the disease.

Healthy pigs and boars usually become infected by contact with infected animals, ingestion of meat or meat products from infected animals, contact with anything contaminated by the virus (such as clothing, vehicles and other equipment)  and through bites by infectious ticks. Movement of infected animals, contaminated pork products and the illegal disposal of carcasses are the most significant means of spread of the disease.

There are neither vaccines nor cures. For this reason, it has serious socio-economic consequences in affected countries.

Thus, as part of the communication and awareness campaign of the African Swine Fever Disease Action and Prevention Plan 2019-2021, we share with you the posters prepared by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) for the prevention of ASF.
